Las Marismas de Lebrija, S.C.A.

In the municipal district of Lebrija there is a wetlands  area currently known as Sector B-XII , situated in the Lower Guadalquiver  Irrigation Zone, which, in 1978, was divided among the agricultural workers and farmers of Seville Province and the surrounding areas by the Institute for Agrarian Reform and Development ( IRYDA- initials in Spanish). 

In September, 1979, farmers who received land decided to create a cooperative whose primary purpose was to join forces to better defend their interests. Consequently, Las Marismas De Lebrija , S.C.A  has since provided  a number of services to its members, such as the collective purchase of fertilizers, seeds, phytosanitary products, machinery,etc… 

Lebrija traditionally being a cotton producing area, and cotton being one of the crops that has best adapted to the recovered marshlands,  it is no surprise that in recent years cotton production has occupied a large part of the growing area and has played a key role in the economic growth of the region. With regard to this crop Las Marismas De Lebrija S.C.A has acted as an agglomerating force for the cotton production of its members, installing its own ginning plant in 1984.  

In 1989, with the need to introduce new crops that would allow for greater diversification, the cultivation of tomatoes for industrial processing was promoted.

This led to the acquisition of tomato concentrate manufacturing facilities which have undergone several expansions to its current processing capacity of 225,000 tonnes, equivalent to 2,500 hectares of cultivated area. In 2003, the construction of a new Horticulture Handling Centre was completed in order to meet the needs of other recently established crops such as broccoli, carrots, etc… 

Currently, the cooperative is made up of 526 members.
